I have been a member of the Cardiff Print Workshop for about ten years, having learnt the art of printmaking at the courses there. I specialise in black and white linocuts, and have done three series on an anti-war theme, including the Women’s Peace Petition of 1924 and the current demonstrations in Cardiff against the current genocide in Gaza.
I have enjoyed using old family photographs, of my family and others, as the basis for my prints as well. I’m drawn to the quirky – bike wheels, rucked up socks, hats, signs and medals to name a few.
I saw three photos in the Victoria Park pub a year or two back of the floods in the 1970s. These were made most famous by Billy the Seal escaping his pond and making it halfway down Cowbridge Road East. When I moved to Victoria Park over 30 years ago everyone knew the story of the floods, and especially Billy’s escape immortalised in a song by Frank Hennessy. Now far fewer do, but there is still a statue of Billy in the park today. I realised that this subject fitted the ‘Ebb and Flow’ theme of this exhibition perfectly and was delighted to get to work on them.
