Photo Intaglio Printmaking

1 day course 10am – 4pm, Saturday 17th September 2022

This course is intended for anyone with a passion for printmaking and photography, areas of image making that have long overlapped and complemented each other. A basic introduction to photo-etching using photopolymer intaglio techniques. This workshop will cover all the elements needed to produce a successful print using photopolymer plates.

Relief Printing and Reduction Lino

6 weekly evening classes, Tuesdays 7-9pm

20th September – 25th October 2022

The class will look at how linocut is used to create striking graphic effects, taking inspiration from some of the great exponents of the art. We will explore the range of tools and different marks made by each and learn how to print by hand and the presses in the workshop. We will also learn the art of reduction cutting to produce multi-coloured print works.

Finding Form in the Landscape

6 weekly day classes

Wednesdays 2-4pm, 21st September – 26th October 2022

Drawing inspiration from the landscape, discover how to use collograph printmaking techniques to produce beautiful and unexpected prints rich in texture and detail. This course will explore the art of collograph and show how to create expressive and painterly effects, using pattern and texture to construct plates on mount card and tetrapac.

Monotype Printmaking

1 day course 10am – 4pm, Saturday 29th October

Explore the simplest and most direct form of printmaking. Monotype is the art of manipulating the inks on the surface of a blank plate and printing from it to produce a one off original printed artwork. Using the studio presses learn how to use masks, objects and layering to produce dazzling prints with unexpected results.

Cyanotype

1 day course 10am – 4pm, Saturday 12th November

Cyanotype is an antique photographic process distinctive for its Prussian blue monochrome prints. It was invented in the Victorian era but was quickly forgotten as photography improved.

Recently there has been renewed interest in old or alternative photographic techniques and cyanotype is recognised as being one of the easiest and safest forms of these to master. Learn to mix and apply the chemicals to a variety of surfaces, expose objects and produce digital negatives, develop and tint the results.

This course offers a great entry point to the world of printmaking – guiding you through a variety of styles and techniques, including tips for setting up and printing at home. Suitable for beginners or those with experience already, the Introduction to Printmaking Course is designed to provide an essential foundation to methods and design processes used in print. Over the duration of the course you will gain a working knowledge of this historic area of art and design and be encouraged to explore the many different ways it can be used for artistic expression.

Etching copper with Ferric Chloride

2 day course 10am – 4pm, Saturday 19th and 26th November 2022

Learn how to produce fine etchings in copper. This workshop is aimed at beginners and experienced printmakers alike and will cover all the main aspects of etching line and aquatint using traditional grounds with ferric chloride. Print Crafts – Paper Making Cards

This one day card making workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities. Learn the technique of paper making using recycled paper pulp and organic materials to produce unique textural papers from which to make beautiful and original cards.

Every week on Tuesday by appointment only

10am – 12pm / 2pm – 4pm

Fee: £30 per session or £60 for the day (10% off for CPW members)

The Open Access Sessions are for printmakers to use the print facilities at Cardiff Print Workshop. They are times when the workshop will be staffed by an experienced printmaker to allow anyone with previous printmaking experience or who has completed a printmaking class at CPW to be able to continue to use the workshop for their own projects.

CPW have the facilities for:
