This latest series of prints invites viewers to connect more deeply with the natural world, offering moments for quiet contemplation of the beauty around us. Through abstracted images of gulls in flight, shifting thermals, clouds, tides, and sea spray, these works capture the fleeting essence of nature’s rhythms—instilling a sense of awe for the boundless sky and the depths of the sea.
The process of etching, which uses mordants to “bite” into the metal plate, parallels the natural erosion shaping our coastlines. Each etched line reflects the powerful forces altering our landscapes, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance in these ever-changing environments.
I am a printmaker based near the Severn Estuary in the UK, drawing much of my inspiration from both the Welsh and English sides of the river. It focuses on intaglio printmaking processes to create works that evoke the mutability found within contemporary coastal landscapes, translating the impacts of human activities through drawing and print. The interplay between the matrix [plate] and the substrate [paper] acts as a way for me to create ephemeral interpretations from the far reaches of the British Isles.
I am developing ARE (acrylic resist etching) methods that are mindful of environmental impact whilst developing a sustainable practice and I teach courses on etching, monotype and collagraph.
I was awarded the Kingslake-Jones Drawing Prize 2021 for drawing and State of the Art award 2021, Printmaking Today after completing a BA in Drawing & Print at UWE (University the West of England). I will be studying an MA in Multi Disciplinary Printmaking at UWE and I am currently researching the historical and applied science of making ink.
