My journey with linocut printing began many years ago during my teacher training, and I always intended to return to it later in life. That opportunity came when I discovered Cardiff Print Workshop at the start of my retirement, allowing me to reignite my passion for linocut. Since then, I’ve not only rediscovered the joy of linocut but have also embraced the opportunity to experiment with and learn new printmaking techniques.
One of the methods I’ve grown particularly fond of is drypoint etching, which allows for incredible precision and fine detail—qualities I find deeply satisfying. The process of creating intricate lines and textures through this technique gives my work a sense of depth and realism that I strive for in each piece.
Much of my inspiration comes from nature. I have a special fondness for the small, often overlooked creatures like bugs, but my work also draws heavily from landscapes—especially the water, sea, and woodland environments that offer endless inspiration. The natural world, with its diversity and beauty, provides a rich source of imagery for my prints, allowing me to explore both the fine details and the broader forms of the landscapes that captivate me.
Through my work, I aim to capture the essence of nature’s beauty, whether it’s the intricate patterns found on an insect or the vastness of a seascape. My prints reflect a deep connection to the world around me, and I continue to explore how different techniques can bring that world to life on paper.
